Canton Mayor Elect Shawn Packard Uploads Video of Animal Abuse

The video you see on this page was uploaded by Shawn Packard.   Packard is the Mayor elect of the borough of Canton Pennsylvania, in Bradford county.   The video shows Packard giving wine to what appears to be a young dog.   This is animal abuse.

Intentionally giving your dog wine is considered animal abuse because alcohol is toxic to dogs and can cause severe illness or death, even in small amounts. This is due to the following factors.

  • Toxicity: Dogs process alcohol (ethanol) much less efficiently than humans, making them highly susceptible to alcohol poisoning.
  • Central Nervous System (CNS) Depression: Alcohol is a CNS depressant that can cause disorientation, lack of coordination, and lethargy. In severe cases, it can lead to respiratory failure, coma, or seizures.
  • Grapes: Wine is made from grapes, which are a separate and severe toxin for dogs. Ingesting grapes or raisins can lead to acute kidney failure in some dogs, and the toxic dose is not precisely known.
  • Physical Effects: Alcohol can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), low body temperature (hypothermia), gastrointestinal distress (vomiting and diarrhea), and a dangerous condition called metabolic acidosis, which affects the heart rate and blood pressure.
